Relations between China and Azerbaijan

[Political relations] Diplomatic relations between China and Azerbaijan were established on April 2, 1992. The relations between the two countries are developing smoothly with intensive high-level exchanges. Azerbaijan attaches great importance to its relations with China and supports China's principled stand on issues related to Taiwan, Xizang, Xinjiang and "Falun gong". All political forces actively advocate strengthening friendly cooperation with China. China is one of the first countries to recognize the independence of Azerbaijan. President of Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev came to China in August 2008, May 2014 and April 2019 to attend the Opening Ceremony of the Beijing Olympic Games, the The Fourth CICA Summit, and the Second Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation. He paid two State visits to China in March 2005 and December 2015. In May 2016, Special Envoy of President Xi Jinping, member of the political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Secretary of the Central political and Law Commission Meng Jianzhu visited Azerbaijan. In June this year, Zhang Gaoli, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Vice Premier of the State Council of China, visited Azerbaijan. In May 2019, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi visited Azerbaijan. Later in September, Li Zhanshu, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress of China, visited Azerbaijan. In October, Deputy Prime Minister of Republic of Azerbaijan Hajibala Abutalybov came to China to attend the Closing Ceremony of the 2019 Beijing World Horticultural Exhibition.

 

[Economic and trade relations] In 2019, the trade volume of China and Azerbaijan reached 1.48 billion US dollars, with an increase of 65.4% year on year. Among them, China's export reached 616 million US dollars, with an increase of 19.5%, and China's import reached 870 million US dollars, with an increase of 127.5%. In January-August this year, the trade volume of China and Azerbaijan reached 860 million US dollars, with a year-on-year decrease of 25.3%. Among them, China's export reached 390 million US dollars, with an increase of 6.4%, and China's import reached 460 million US dollars, with a decrease of 40.4%. China is the fourth largest trading partner, the fourth largest export destination and the third largest  source of import for Azerbaijan.

 

In 1999, the two sides held the first meeting of the China-Azerbaijan Intergovernmental Commission on Trade and Economic Cooperation , and seven meetings have been held since then.

 

[Other areas] The two sides have cooperated smoothly in the fields of education, culture, technology, sports, tourism, media and other fields. The two sides have cooperated jointly set up two Confucius Institutes in Azerbaijan.
